Steve Groening, special projects manager for the 500-plus-acre sand mine that Unimin Corporation is building in Tunnel City, said at last night's regularly monthly town of Greenfield meeting that the mine should be producing sand by the end of 2013.
Groening, who is the on-the-ground guy for the Tunnel City sand mine, gave an update about what Unimin is doing. Drilling is underway and area residents will definitely see an impact.

Board Votes to Study Zoning, Start Negotiations With Unimin

The town of Greenfield board last night voted unanimously to create a five-person committee to come up with recommendations for ordinances and the possibility of a zoning plan for the town. Town attorney Rick Radcliffe said the committee's work could including coming up with a moratorium to present to the board that could prevent new sand mines coming into the town of Greenfield while the township works on zoning or ordinances to accomplish that long term. Unimin, which is building its biggest sand mine outside Tunnel City, would not be covered by the moratorium, mainly because of state regulations governing non-metallic mining companies. Essentially, they are already in the business of mining in the township.
