Here's what you can do to try to control what Unimin does and stop new sand mines from coming in.

Call your representatives!

Tell them what you want done.
Do you want a moratorium?
Do you want zoning?
Are you worried about silica sand causing cancer? Remember, if you live in Tomah, you are downwind of this plant. The most dangerous silica dust is so small you can't see it.

What kind of constraints do you want on Unimin?

Protect Your Water!

Now is the time to start measuring your wells to establish a benchmark should the sand mine begin operations and have a negative impact on your water. You should have wells measured monthly, according to one source, in order to establish a pattern.

The ideal thing would be to have a record of several years. Any less than that and the mining company might be able to say that your well was down because of dry spell. But any record could help. For more information, contact the Monroe County Land Conservation Department at 269-8974.
